Valencia's Levante F.C. has made a presentation to Spain's Minister for Public
Admoinistration Mr. Jordi Sevilla regarding its intention to build a new stadium
in the port of Valencia adjacent to where the America's Cup is presently taking
place. The club has already received the backing of the city's mayoress Ms.
Rita Barbera and the President of Valencia's regional government Mr. Francisco
Camps.
The presentation was made by the club's president Mr. Julio Romero and the
club's major shareholder Mr. Pedro Villarroel accompanied by the project's
architect Mr. Alejandro Escribano. The plan is for the stadium to be in place
within a 4 year time frame with construction starting in 2009 and being completed
by 2011.
The site on which Levante intend to build is presently occupied by Union Naval
Shipbuilders which has a lease on the site from central government until 2020.Union
Naval is owned by the Boluda family, one which has strong links to Levante
F.C.The family intend to transfer the shipyard further up the coast to the
port at Sagunto.
Levante F.C.'s proposal is to build a multiuse stadium on a site of 30,000
sqm within the port itself with a capacity of between 30 and 35,000. The stadium
will be surrounded on 3 sides by water and will be connected to the city centre
via France Avenue. With over €400 million having been invested in the port
in preparation for this year's America's Cup, the setting would be truly fantastic.
The projected cost is €90 million with the club obtaining €180 million
from the rezoning of the grounds in Orriols where the club presently resides
in the city offering 50,000 sqm of buildable land at €3,600 per sqm thereby
allowing the club to make a handsome profit of €90 million before stadium
sponsorship is even considered. Valencia F.C. intend to make €300 million
from the sale of its present stadium Mestalla and an additional €100 million
from the sponsorship of the new stadium.
Mr. Villarroel let it be known at the presentation of the project that the
club's intention is to use artifical grass given advances made in its quality
in the recent past.
With Villareal F.C. within an hour's drive of Valencia and the city itself
home to both Valencia F.C. and Levante F.C. as well as the distinct possibility
of Formula 1 coming to the city next year and the America's Cup presently taking
place ; Valencia is gaining an ever increasing international profile. The region's
President Mr. Francisco Camps has recently let it be known that the city intends
to stage the Olympic Games at some stage again adding to the city's lure.
