Valencia becomes Spain’s First City to be Mapped by Google Transit

Valencia has yet again broken the mould having been chosen by the internet behemoth Google as Spain’s first city to be Transit Mapped. Basically, this means that via the Google Transit Maps System, one can work out the quickest route around the city by means of public transport.

The city’s mayoress was truly ecstatic at the unveiling of the system, yet another first for the city recently. The system uses data from the 200 transport lines that criss-cross the city with no less than 2,300 different stops. The transport data comes from EMT, the city’s bus service as well as MetroValencia and the Metropolitan bus service. There is a possibility that the local regional train service will be added to the system down the line.

For example : to get from the Town Hall to the inner marina of the America’s Cup marina will take 29 minutes by bus.

The only snags that the system has re its usability are that it doesn’t take account of either traffic jams or road closures where and when they might arise.

The Google Transit Maps System was started in Portland, U.S.A. in 2005.

There are presently just two other European cities with comparable Google Transit Maps, namely Lisbon and Vienna.

The system even offers transport alternatives where journeys are longer.
