Valencia at last finally cherishes its Seaboard

Added: (Mar 2009)

The vibrant Mediterranean city of Valencia is truly living through vibrant times at present. What was a much cherished desire in the 90s to truly maximise the city's location on the Mediterranean seaboard is finally being realised. The ideas in an original governmental document entitled : “ Valencia , Balcony to the Sea” are now coming to fruition thanks principally to the Trojan work of the city's longtime Mayoress Ms. Rita Barbera and her P.P. (Partido Popular) party.

Historically, Valencians really lived with their backs to the sea so to speak using the beach in Malvarosa with its fine prom of 3 kms only in the Summer months. As the beach is at one extreme of the city and there were only bus links servicing the area, locals considered it “far away” and only used it in the peak Summer period which was a pity given it is a truly incredible natural resource especially for a city the size of Valencia which is Spain's third biggest with a city population in the region of 800,000 inhabitants rising to 1.5 million within a radius of 30 kms.

Public transport links have been significantly improved with Metro, Tram and Bus links to the Port area and a new Metro / Tram line on the way that will serve the marina's docks. The real catalyst that truly propelled the modernisation of the Port area was the arrival of the America's Cup in 2007 which resulted in an investment of over €500 million and made the newly named Marina (King Juan Carlos 1 st ) the biggest marina in the Med ; overtaking Monaco in the process.

The arrival of Formula 1 in 2008 further enhanced both the Citys and the Marina's ever growing cachet : all the more so since Formula 1 will be staying until at least 2014 and the America's Cup will be returning in either 2010 or 2011 with Pre Regattas this year in both July and October. A new “F1 Neighbourhood” is also planned which will have sizable parks and navegable waterways leading to the inner marina. For more info, see the following press release :

The big news story regarding the whole docks area of late has been the ceding of the entire docks area from the National Ports Authority to the city authorities which will result in the kickstarting of long term projects in the docks which had been placed on hold due to the uncertainty regarding the long term ownership of the area. One such project that is ready to go is a casino which will be owned by the “Monte Picayo” casino group which already has a very successful casino on the outskirts of the city.It intends to build 2 casinos in the city, the principal one being down the street from the new Valencia F.C. stadium on the “Las Cortes Valencianas Ave” with a smaller one of between 1,500 and 2,000 sqms in the marina. The group is studying three possible locations in the port area, namely either in one of the former America 's Cup team buildings, one of the historical warehouses which are used as the F1 pits or down on the beach near the 5 Star “Las Arenas” hotel. Regardless of which location wins out, a casino in the port area will further add to its cosmopolitan aura.

The city's Mayoress, Ms. Barbera intends that the city becomes the Sports Port of Madrid and has already advanced this wish by getting Valencia placed on Madrid 's bid for the 2016 Olympics as Madrids Sport's Port for all Olympic nautical events. With the arrival of Spain 's high speed train the A.V.E. next year (above ground initially and below ground from 2014), Madrid will be just 1 hour and 25 minutes away as opposed to the present 3.5. hours making Valencia all the more attractive for people from Madrid especially beachside property in Valencia .

A visible indicator of the city's growing international prestige is the arrival of up to 200,000 visitors a year to the city now via Cruise Ships (representing 10% of total annual visitor numbers) ; a business that was non existent in the early ninties. The arrival of the international “cruise set” has directly led to the establishment of luxury shops such as Bulgari and Hermes on Valencia 's Golden Mile in Poeta & Querol St.
