The Valencian government is continuing with its major infrastructural city projects regardless of the recession. Proof of this can be seen from its continued support of the new metro line (line 2) which will link the city's Serrano Towers with the new Formula 1 neighbourhood in “El Grao” with the last stop being in Nazaret. The total cost of the project will be in the region of half a billion Euros with the government looking for the private sector to underwrite the cost of the project in return for a concession regarding the revenues gained from the line over a fixed period of time. It is estimated that in the region of 25 million passengers will use the line annually. The Valencian government is willing to consider a number of options regarding the granting of the concession from merely running the line to a total package which would include the purchase of the trains to be used on the line down to the ticketing machines themselves.
Several new stations are being built along the line which will have 12 stops in total. From an engineering perspective, the most difficult one is the station that is presently being built under the city's historic “Mercado Central” which is Europe 's largest indoor fruit market. The line will be at a depth of 30 metres below ground in the area of the Maercado Central with the works reaching a depth of 52 metres in total. Above ground there will be a 5 storey car park with a capacity for 800 cars.
The new line is projected to be up and running in 2011 and it will mark a first in the city's transportation history as both metro and tram lines will operate from the same platform. The city's newest bridge, namely the “L'Assud de L'Or” (designed by Santiago Calatrava) which rises 125 metres into the Valencian skyline and at present is the city's tallest structure has space for a tram line if required in the future allowing an additional transport hub to link the city and the beach as well as the F1 circuit and America's Cup marina.
