Valencia , having already hosted both the America 's Cup in 2007 and Formula 1 in 2008 with both events returning to the city will now showcase one of showjumping's premier events, namely the “Global Champions Tour”. The event will take place in the city's illustrious “City of the Sciences” facility over three days on the weekend of the 8 th of May this year. Valencia has been chosen among 8 other cities, further adding to its status as a prestige sporting events holder. A total prize money of €5 million is on offer to the participants.
The Spanish equestrian sporting events organiser “Oxer” has obtained the rights to the event for 5 years and has contracted Valencia to stage the event for at least 3 of these with the possibility of a 2 year extension. Eurosport has bought the tv rights to the event with a projected global audience of 50 million viewers in 59 countries. As can be seen from the accompanying image, the jumping arena will be built over what normally is an ornamental water feature which adjoins the Prince Felipe Science Museum which is just one part of the vast “City of the Sciences” complex ; part of which is Europe 's biggest indoor aquarium : The Oceanographic.
The organisers are studying the possibility of not charging for the 1,200 tickets that will be available for the event as a means of further boosting the event among locals as showjumping is a minority sport in football, motorbike and basketball mad Spain. An equestrian village will be built with marquees for guests to really enjoy a day out at the showjumping as well as an equestrian garden where spectators can browse and see the horses being prepared for the event.
