Valencia : Europe's Fastest Growing City for Tourists

Valencia has become Europe's fastest growing city with regard to tourist numbers. According to the results of a recently released poll by the European Cities Marketing Federation which consists of the continents top 100 tourist cities. Among the 40 cities evaluated in the survey, Valencia, not only came out on top for the average increase in tourist stayovers in general but also in the international tourist category. The research covered the years 2002 to 2007 inclusively. With regard to the general increase the average was 5.3% across the cities surveyed whereas Valencia came out tops on 14%. In the international tourist category Valencia took first place at 17.6% with the continental average being 6%. Tourist magnets such as London and Paris were just holding their own with growth at just over 1% which was quite interesting and in 39th and 37th places in the general tourist growth category ; 2nd and 4th from the bottom.

According to the experts, the keys to Valencia's success have been the immense growth in transport related infrastructure and the bringing of world class events to the city such as the America's Cup, Formula 1 and the World Athletics' Championship.

Turespaña which is Spain's state tourism institute has also been pushing the city strongly having undertaken presentations in Valencia already this year to travel agents from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belguim and Switzerland. It also organised trips by media organisations from Sweden, Japan, Canada and the U.S. to the city during "Fallas" which is the city's annual festival in March from the 15th to the 19th. It intends to carry out 204 promotional events in the coming year to further boost the city's international awareness and attractiveness.
