Valencia just grows from strength and is daily becoming a “must see” visit for tourists the world over especially those who like to keep up to date with all the “hottest destinations” on the global tourist trail. Valencia is now attracting over 200,000 tourists via cruise ships, a market that was virtually non existent all of ten years ago. This year a total of 174 luxury cruise ships will tie up in the city that is increasingly becoming known as the “Florida of Mainland Europe” given its all year round sunshine, seaside location and excellent transport links. Tourist numbers visiting the city have exploded since 2000 with over 2 million expected this year which is a 200% increase since the start of the new millennium. The fact that in the region of 10% of the total is via luxury cruise ships, speaks volumes about the city’s ever increasing appeal among the well healed jet set.
Valencia recently played host to none other than the Q.E.2 , on its way to Dubai where it will end its days as a floating luxury hotel. The city’s phenomenal rise to fame can be attributed to several factors such as the vanguardian architecture of Santiago Calatrava’s the “City of the Sciences”, a beautifully preserved historical city centre, the arrival of sailing’s Olympics the “America’s Cup” in 2007, F1 this year and a sustained marketing campaign driven by the Valencian government. Proof of the city’s increasing global cachet is evident on the city’s luxury shopping street Poeta and Querol where top end brand names such as Bulgari and Hermes have opened up side by side with local stalwarts such as Lladro.
Cruise ship visitors to Valencia are principally coming for a mixture of sun, sea and culture as reflected in the comments of a number of recent visitors who came on the P & O Cruise Liner “Oriana”. Ms. Bellinda Dennis of London told local reporters : “I have loved Valencia, above all the beach. I have not yet seen anything like it”. Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson described Valencia as being : “excellent, modern and traditional at the same time” and being so different from their native Southampton that they are thinking of coming to live in the city. Proof if ever it were needed of the lure of such a gem as Valencia.
