The globally renowned Berklee School of Music will open its first music school outside the U.S. in Valencia in 2010 with the inauguration of its "Tower of Music". The Berklee School of Music was founded in Boston in 1945 and counts the likes of Quincy Jones, Diana Krall and Branford Marsalis among its alumni. The development will cover an area of 50,000 sqms and rise to 100 metres over 26 storeys. The educational music centre will have capacity for 1,000 students with a third coming from Europe, a third from the U.S. and the remainder from the rest of the world with a requirement to place a certain number of local students from the Valencian region. The budget for the project is €100 million.
The Music Tower will have an auditorium with seating for 1,000 guests as well as lecture halls, recording and editing studios, library, conference areas, multimedia centre, commercial area re music sales and a residential area. The residential area will comprise 104 apartments including duplexes with 20 to 25% of these for both students and teachers.
At the base of the building there will be a large water feature which can be emptied to provide an outdoor concert venue. There will also be a rooftop solarium dubbed the "beach" as well as numerous terraces and squares throughout the building.
